In previous posts, I've said and wirtten about how NZ may have future that is not what anyone in Aotearoa wants to see unfold. I've submitted as part of my Masters a initial paper on how NZ could address this.
NZ, We Have a Problem: It’s Time for Bold Steps to Ensure Our Future
Aotearoa, New Zealand, has a proud history of world-leading innovation. From nuclear physics to women's suffrage, electric fences to Rocket Lab, our contributions have been significant. But the world is changing at a rapid pace, driven by technology, and our traditional strengths may not be enough to ensure future prosperity.
The Challenge
New Zealand faces significant challenges:
Declining Competitiveness: Our ranking in the IMD World Competitiveness Index has dropped, indicating a concerning trend.
Productivity Slowdown: Our labor productivity growth has slowed to a crawl compared to previous decades and OECD averages.
Economic Vulnerability: We heavily rely on primary sectors like agriculture, which are threatened by climate change and other factors.
Innovation Gap: Despite strengths in governance and education, we lag in innovation capability and technology adoption.
Lack of Coordinated Strategy: Our approach to AI and technology is fragmented, hindering progress.
The Solution: A National AI Technology Incubator
To address these challenges, this paper proposes establishing a national AI technology incubator through a public-private partnership. This incubator would:
Advance Industry 4.0: Drive innovation in key technologies.
Diversify the Economy: Reduce reliance on traditional sectors.
Future-proof New Zealand: Position us for success in the global tech landscape.
Key Elements for Success
Strategic Stakeholder Engagement: Involving diverse groups, including Māori and Pacific communities, to ensure inclusivity and equity.
Ethical Foundations: Embedding strong governance, transparency, and data ethics into the incubator's core.
Kaupapa Māori Principles: Integrating Māori values like Manaakitanga (care and respect) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) to guide development.
Innovative Technology: Developing and implementing FEE (Federated Edge Exposed) technology to prioritize transparency and consumer empowerment.
A Call to Action
New Zealand stands at a crossroads. We can either adapt and lead in the 21st century or risk being left behind. Establishing a Sovereign Innovations Technological Incubator (SITI) is a bold step towards a future where New Zealand is known for innovation, ethics, and inclusivity. Let's seize this opportunity to rebrand NZ Inc. and secure a prosperous future for
